Wednesday, 9/23 | 7:30-9pm
The location for all classes will be:
Dance Underground
340 15th Ave E, Seattle, WA 98112
Prerequisites for this series: If you’ve already taken the Beginner (intro) series, or you are independently already comfortable with the basic steps like Running Man, T-Step, Charleston, and X-Step, you are ready to join Building Blocks!
Building Blocks is the next step after the Intro series, created for dancers who know the basic steps but freeze up when the music starts and it’s actually time to DANCE. Each month rotates through a different building block of dance confidence: Make It Yours (turning your moves into your moves), Link It Up (smoothing out the transitions and finding creative connections to help you flow), and Find Your Pocket (learning to listen and respond to the music in your own way). Take them in any order! Each month stands on its own, and together they combine to build your own unique shuffle personality.
Find Your Pocket
You know the moves. You’ve got some variations under your belt. You can link them together and dance your way through the basics... Now it's time to actually feel the music.
Find Your Pocket is for rising beginner shufflers who are past the "how do I transition?” stage and are ready to let the music lead. This month we will go beneath the surface of your dancing and dig into beat structure, musical layers, and the subtle shifts in texture and timing that turn a sequence of moves into something that actually feels like dancing.
What You'll Learn
✅How to find and follow the 8-count so you always know where you are in the music
✅What musical layers are and how to respond to them in your movement
✅What textures are and how to use them to shift the dynamics, aesthetic, and feeling of your shuffle
✅Strategies for creating "wow" moments, getting back on beat, and building a flow that could go on forever
✅ Cultural context and insight into both Melbourne Shuffle & Cutting Shapes styles
This series is about learning to listen, and letting the music tell you what to do next. As with every series in the Building Blocks program, it goes deeper than the dance moves - we will address you and your dance wholistically. You’ll learn how to move with confidence, how to practice, how to care for your body, and cultivate the mindset that will carry you through your dance journey with strength, integrity, creativity, and JOY
Come with a learner’s mentality, ready to ask questions and experiment and have breakthroughs and discover new pieces of yourself you didn’t know were there! I am so excited to dance with you and help you flourish :)
